Absolute return is the percentage expression that expresses an asset's (i.e. stock or bond) value appreciation or depreciation over a period of time. Absolute return is different from relative return since the percentage change in value is expressed in terms of the assets previous value and not in terms of some other asset or benchmark. In articles and publications when references are made to an asset's return it almost always means that asset's absolute return.
